The Tri-M Tradition
The purpose of this organization is to inspire music participation, create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, and promote leadership in the music students of secondary schools. In 1930, the Great Depression was just digging in. As businesses closed and people lost their homes, the future of public school music education looked grim. But in that year, a high school music teacher, Alexander M. Harley, was challenged by his principle to turn Main Township High School into a “music center” for the Chicago suburb of Des Plaines. Harley did this by forming vocal and instrumental ensembles that performed free concerts for the communities.
Today, more than 75 years later, Alexander Harley’s memory and dedication to music education lives on through our “Modern Music Masters” as seen today. With chapters in junior and senior high schools across all 50 states and over 13 foreign countries, the values if this society are alive and well with our nation’s youth.
